To Every Family Caregiver: Let Me Celebrate You For a Moment
Family caregivers often carry an invisible weight while caring for someone who is seriously ill or nearing the end of life. As an end-of-life doula, I've had the privilege of witnessing the quiet strength, love and resilience that so many caregivers bring every single day. This is for you.
One of the unexpected gifts of being an end-of-life doula is that I get to witness a side of people that most of the world never sees.
When someone becomes seriously ill, so much attention naturally goes to the person who is sick. Their needs become the focus. Their appointments, the medications, their comfort, their fears and wishes take center stage. As they should.
But quietly, often in the background, there is someone else whose life has also changed.
A husband.
A wife.
A daughter.
A son.
A sibling.
A friend.
Over the years, I have watched ordinary people do extraordinary things for the people they love. Not the kind of extraordinary things that receive awards or recognition. The kind that happen behind closed doors when nobody is watching.
I’ve seen people learn skills they never imagined they would ever need to learn. I’ve seen them navigate complicated medical systems, advocate fiercely for their loved ones, sleep in uncomfortable chairs, put their own lives on hold, and somehow continue to show up day after day.
What strikes me most is that they rarely see themselves the way I see them.
Most family caregivers don’t talk about their strength. They talk about what they forgot. What they wish they had done differently. The moments they lost their patience. The things they think they should have done better. And at the end, those are usually the thoughts and images that can hunt them.
Meanwhile, I’m sitting there watching an incredible expression of love unfold in real time. Not the kind of love we usually celebrate in movies or even greeting cards but a much deeper kind. A love that stays… that shows up even when it’s tired. A love that keeps going when there is no one cheering and no guarantee that things will get any easier.
I think about the countless small moments I’ve witnessed over the years. A husband carefully brushing his wife’s hair. A daughter adjusting her mother’s blanket without even thinking about it. A son learning how to help his father eat or walk. And let’s not mention all of the sleepless nights worrying about them. None of these moments would seem remarkable to the people doing them.
Yet from where I sit, they are.
Because love is rarely found in big gestures. More often, love reveals itself in the quiet things we do for one another when life becomes difficult. I’ve lived it myself and know the power it has. If you have cared for someone you love, whether for months, years, or even just a short period of time, I hope you know that what you gave truly mattered.
Not because you did everything perfectly. No one does.
Not because you always knew the right thing to say. None of us do.
But because you showed up. You loved. You stayed even when things were hard.
And in a world that often celebrates achievement, productivity and success, I think there is something incredibly beautiful about the people who quietly devote themselves to caring for another human being near the end of life.
So today, let me celebrate you for a moment!
Not just for what you did but for who you were and who you became through loving someone so so deeply.
So If You're Caring for Someone Right Now
If you're caring for a loved one, remember:
- You don't have to do everything perfectly.
- Accept help when it's offered.
- Your presence matters more than perfection.
- Take moments to care for yourself too.
- Ask questions. No one expects you to know everything.
With love,
Lara 💜
